MONROE, La. (KNOE) – The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living will host a webinar called “Get Real About Vaping” on Monday, June 9 from 3 to 4 p.m. on Zoom.
The webinar will be lead by those who are members of the Tobacco-Free Living’s Youth Advisory Board to give parents insight on the dangers of vaping.
“One in three high schoolers are vaping, and one out of five middle middle schoolers are vaping. Also, the average age of youth to start vaping within the state is between the ages of 13 and 14,” said Chrishelle Stipe, senior manager for health promotion for the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living.
These statistics are from the latest data from the Louisiana Tobacco Youth Survey.
Stipe said these statistics are the reason this organization is pushing to make adults aware of the dangers of vaping in children.
“We want to dispel those myths around vaping that currently are there and give parents advice on how to approach their youth,” said Stipe.
During the webinar, people will be able to learn how communities, families and schools can be involved in advocating for tobacco-free living.
Plus, they will learn about school cultures regarding vaping and how to address it.
Maurice Davis, a youth advisory board member from Monroe, said peer pressure is a major factor in schools.
“It’s the source of a lot of activities that youth undergo due to the social emphasis at the time, so you’re more likely going to do what you observe and what people similar to you are doing,” said Davis.
Davis explained why it is essential the adults hear from the youth about how to combat the nationwide issue of vaping.
“Being able to discuss and gain information from that same group specifically allows us to have information from people who have a first person experience with this,” said Davis.
