CHARLESTON, W.Va (WDTV) – West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey issued a consumer alert Friday morning warning parents of certain vaping devices that may be attractive to youth.
According to McCuskey, these Chinese-made products look like smartphones and other smart devices and attempt to hide the fact that they’re vaping devices, making them more difficult for parents to detect.
90% of the Chinese vape products entering the United States go undetected, McCuskey says.
McCuskey, along with 27 other attorneys general, say they are urging the Trump Administration to strengthen efforts to quell the distribution of these products in the U.S.
While he continues to work with the Trump Administration to meet this goal, McCuskey urges West Virginia residents to remain vigilant.
“China is sending billions of dollars of vape products to the United States, but they intentionally mislabel these products to avoid FDA regulation,” McCuskey said. “We don’t know what’s in these products, so adults should be aware of that risk. The Chinese government has banned many of these products in its own country because of high nicotine concentration, flavoring, and marketing. But my biggest concern is that China is building vapes into games and smart devices to market these illegal Chinese products to our children.”
McCuskey said he understands parents’ constant worry, as he is a dad to two girls.
“We all want to protect our kids, and that job is harder when foreign actors directly target them,” McCuskey said. “I hope to inform the public of this danger while we work with the Trump Administration to stop the problem at its source.”
